Background

The Department of English and Linguistics is the largest department in the Academy and caters to all the English language needs of the university. Apart from that, the English Language lecturers are also very involved in writing not only course materials and manuals, but also text books which are currently used by the students and staff of UiTM and other institutions of learning.

Pre-Diploma Level

BEL 011 - INTRODUCRY ENGLISH
Course Description
This programme is designed to upgrade the proficiency level of pre-diploma writing, listening and speaking. The emphasis is on developing communicative fluency based on grammatical accuracy.

 

BEL 020 - PRE-SESSIONAL ENGLISH 1
Course Description
This programme is the first part of a two-semester programme designed to remedy students' weakness in use English and to raise their proficiency level. It covers the major aspects of Grammar, Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Emphasis is placed on developing grammatical accuracy and improving communicative fluency.

* BEL 120 - CONSOLIDATING LANGUAGE SKILLS
Course Description
This course is designed for students whose English language proficiency is at the basic or intermediate levels. It aims to raise their level of proficiency in the language to the intermediate level. This aim is achieved through the integration of the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, with appropriate consideration given to building an appropriate working knowledge of intermediate-level grammar.

 

* BEL 130 - COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Course Description
This course is designed for students at upper-intermediate and advanced level. It focuses on enhancing the students’ ability to use the English language in a variety of given situations. This is achieved through integration of the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening.

 

BEL 260 - PREPARATORY COURSE FOR MUET
Course Description
This course equips students with the skills and strategies to perform effectively in the Malaysian University English Test. It covers major aspects of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening

 

BEL 311 - ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES
Course Description
This course is aimed at preparing students to meet the demands of their respective disciplines. This is achieved by training students to employ the language skills and strategies necessary to carry out their academic tasks.

 

BEL 312 - ENGLISH FOR OCCUPATIONAL PURPOSES
Course Description
This course develops students’ ability to use English with greater confidence and fluency in a range of job-related situations. Tasks and activities suggested for each situation are discipline-based with emphasis on the four language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking.

 

* BEL 313 - INTRODUCTION TO CRITICAL THINKING
Course Description
This course is designed to develop the students’ ability to think clearly, logically and critically in a wide range of situations. It focuses on the basics of critical thinking and the key elements of argument. They will be taught how to evaluate information, establish facts, make assumptions and inference, form opinions and develop arguments.

 

* BEL 332 - ENGLISH FOR PRE-DEGREE LAW I
Course Description
This course is designed specifically for students intending to pursue a degree course at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). It helps students to develop confidence in speaking in situations of academic nature. It also trains students to listen critically and respond appropriately. Materials used will be specific to the different disciplines.

 

* BEL 342 - ENGLISH FOR PRE-DEGREE LAW II
Course Description
English for Academic Purposes II is designed specifically for pre-degree students intending to pursue a degree in law at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). It develops reading and writing skills that will enable students to meet the required standards of academic reading and writing at degree level.

BEL 402 - LANGUAGE ENRICHMENT
Course Description
This is a course designed to reinforce students’ proficiency in the use of English Language. It helps to consolidate the students’ skills in using parts of speech and verb tenses correctly in context. Based on the fundamental aspects of paragraphs and essays, the students are also taught on how to write effectively using correct grammar structures and forms.

 

BEL 413 - LANGUAGE ENHANCEMENT FOR THE HEALTH SCIENCES
Course Description
This course is designed to develop the students’ ability to communicate effectively in the field of Health Science. Tasks and activities suggested are discipline-based involving the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

 

BEL 422/420 -REPORT WRITING
Course Description
This course introduces students to the practical aspects of preparing and presenting reports both orally and in written form. Students are taught to employ the language skills and strategies necessary to write a report based on a combination of primary and secondary research. Students will also be taught the skills of adapting the written report for oral presentation

 

BEL 432 -BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Course Description
This course is designed to help students improve their skills in business correspondence. It will equip students with appropriate strategies and language to write effective business letters, memos and emails. Students will also be taught to analyse business letters, memos and emails and to respond to them correctly and effectively. Students will be exposed to a variety of business correspondence situations.

 

BEL 442 -READING FOR RESEARCH
Course Description
This course is designed to help students develop reading and writing skills for research. The lecturer will guide students through every stage of the process.

 

BEL 452 - EXECUTIVE SUMMARY WRITING
Course Description
The course focuses on developing students’ ability to write executive summaries. Students are taught to summarise key information using a variety of texts such as articles from the Internet or discipline - based reports.

 

BEL 462 - READING AND CRITICAL THINKING
Course Description
This course is designed to develop students’ ability to read analytically and think critically. It focuses on the relationship between reading and critical thinking and provides students with a structured method for interpreting content and organization of written texts. Tasks and activities suggested are discipline-based.

 

BEL 472 - LANGUAGE APPRECIATION
Course Description
This is a course for students to develop the strategies and skills necessary for effective language appreciation of literary texts (poems, short stories and plays) and to develop their appreciation for these texts. Course work focuses on the reading, understanding and appreciation of texts which use language creatively. Students are taught to appreciate, discuss and orally present their understanding of poetry, short story and drama

 

BEL 482 - BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION
Course Description
This is a course for students to develop specific language skills to communicate effectively in work-related contexts. Emphasis is placed on the importance of communicative aspects of conducting discussions and meetings. Students will also be taught to interact in discussions and to conduct meetings effectively according to correct meeting procedures.

 

BEL 492 - PRESENTATION SKILLS
Course Description
This is a course for students to develop the strategies and skills necessary for effective oral presentations. Guidance is provided from the preparatory right up to the final stage of delivery. Emphasis is placed on the importance of verbal and non-verbal communication skills and using visual aids appropriately in oral presentations. Students will also be taught to anticipate and respond to questions and comments orally during a question and answer session

 

BEL 499 - COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
Course Description
This course aims to provide students with the necessary skills to perform at employment interviews. Students are prepared to design resumes, write application letters and are guided to answer questions posed at employment interviews. The course also provides students with communication and interpersonal skills essential for their personal and professional growth
